"A Night of Hope and Healing" supporting Windwood Farm Home for Children

On October 28th, Bera Wealth Advisors, Chrys Kanos and Heath Johnson and their spouses attended the “A Night of Hope and Healing”, an event to raise funds for Windwood Farm Home for Children at historic Cannon Green. The event celebrated 35 years of success in supporting boys in need; providing hope and healing to vulnerable Lowcountry children and families. The celebration featured festive food, cocktails, and entertainment benefiting Windwood Farm Home for Children. The night concluded with a live auction featuring local celebrity auctioneer Tom Crawford and a glimpse into the difference Windwood is making daily in the lives of families and children.

Over the past 35 years, more than 700 boys have called Windwood Farm their home. The services provided here take them one step closer to a brighter future and successful life in our community. The Farm provides the children a place to heal, room to grow, and a chance to be their best selves. Boys ages six to sixteen who have suffered maltreatment, trauma, abuse, or neglect are welcomed to the Farm as a safe environment to heal from past traumas. The goal is simple - end child abuse and neglect in the Lowcountry. To learn more about Windwood Farm Home for Children, visit their website at windwoodfarm.org.

Be A Mentor Outdoor Movie Night

Heath Johnson, Founding Partner at Bera Wealth Advisors joined the Be A Mentor outdoor movie viewing with a few mentor friends and families on October 21st. Heath has supported the Be A Mentor program through volunteering, mentoring, and sponsorship since 2019.

“Be A Mentor is an incredible program that provides a wonderful opportunity to help build confidence, self-esteem, and foundational skills that enable children to thrive.” H.J.

Be A Mentor is a non-profit organization that was established to enable youth to develop positive relationships with caring adults who empower them to reach their full potential through mentorship.

Today, children who grow up in low-income neighborhoods in which can have high levels of unemployment, crime, and violence, are often labelled as "children at-risk."

While this description is apt, it places a negative label on individual children that can ultimately feed into a self-fulfilling prophecy. The Be A Mentor program targets children "on the brink of success" for their programs, flipping the paradigm to the positive. The vision is to ensure that all Lowcountry youth have the character, confidence, and leadership skills to be successful in pursuing their dreams.

Back-To-School Time: Gratitude, Appreciation, and Planning Tips

At Bera, we want to take a moment to share our gratitude and appreciation for all the educators and school staff starting the 2021-2022 school year. The past year imposed new challenges in the classroom from navigating the educational system both in-person and online while keeping students safe, motivated, and engaged. Educators and school staff have gone above and beyond to assist from the beginnings of preschool all the way through high school and college. We entrust our educators with the care and nurturing of our children, especially during a year in crisis, we thank you for blazing a trail for our children to follow. Your kindness, resilience, and educational enrichment has helped our children endure and grow in this ever-evolving environment.

When planning for your children’s education, seeking the advice of a financial planner can help you secure tax-deductible savings for the current and future educational needs. A 529 plan is beneficial for parents of preschoolers through college aged students that allow contributions to grow tax-free if withdrawals are used for qualified educational purposes. While we cannot predict the outcome of this pandemic on our educational system, we can help you and your family create goals to assist in your financial educational planning.

Bera Wealth and Northwestern Mutual Team Members Join SC Aquarium in Park Clean Up Initiative

Northwestern Mutual and Bera Wealth Advisors team members partnered with the South Carolina Aquarium in support of their litter free initiative. On July 30, 2021, our team spent the morning picking up litter along the Ashley River at Brittlebank Park. Collectively, our group picked up 1,406 pieces of litter, which we logged into the Litter-Free Digital Journal, a free app that consumers can use to track litter clean up.

“We want to contribute to improve the health of our beautiful waterways to preserve the ecosystems around us.” CK

The South Carolina Aquarium’s Pam and D. Michael Wilson Plastic-Free Waters program engages communities across the state through hands-on preservation efforts and critical data collection to create a comprehensive overview of conservation needs statewide and provide communities with the tools and knowledge necessary to address plastic pollution directly impacting them.

Utilizing the Aquarium’s Litter-free Digital Journal, an open-source data platform free for all users, communities are able to track their conservation impact through data entry that details the amount, location, and type of debris collected during litter sweeps.

Litter data has been utilized to identify regional conservation concerns in South Carolina and prompt a shift in thought, behavior, and policy. To date, more than 1,600 members have documented and removed more than 1.4M pieces of debris from our environment, which has supported many of the nineteen single-use plastic bag bans passed in SC, as well as statewide legislation currently under consideration.

This initiative has been successful in engaging the public in conservation efforts along our coast and inland. As community participation and data input have increased, we have begun working with communities to interpret findings and engage in solutions-based conversations.

Visit www.scaquarium.org to learn more about SC Aquarium conservation programs.

We all can do our part in making a difference!

How Bera Wealth Advisors Supports First Tee of Greater Charleston

First Tee is a youth development organization introducing the game of golf and its inherent values to kids and teens throughout Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester Counties. Through after-school and in-school programs, they help shape the lives of young people from all walks of life by reinforcing values like integrity, respect, and perseverance through the game of golf.

Recently, the Bera team completed the 100 Hole Hike Challenge through the First Tee to work towards breaking down barriers to make the game more accessible to all kids. Over $125k was raised for the challenge and that number is still growing!

“We are glad that through our volunteering and fundraising efforts, we are able to help shape the lives of young people.” - Chrys Kanos.

Kanos is a Board Member of the Young Ambassadors Council (YAC), which launched in 2013. The YAC is a network of young professionals dedicated to The First Tee of Greater Charleston’s (TFTGC) mission. YAC members are engaged in addressing issues of critical importance to TFTGC, as well as contributing to the growth and development of the organization. The YAC supports TFTGC through fundraising, awareness, and volunteer efforts to diversify the organization’s reach to the local community and its young people.

Beginning in 1997, First Tee aimed to use the game of golf and the values it provides to teach children across the globe essential life skills. Since then, First Tee has used the sport to reach millions of kids in all 50 states and internationally. Reaching 5.3 million young people in 2016, their impacts have only continued to grow! What began as a way to introduce golf into communities that traditionally did not have access to the sport, slowly became a catalyst for instilling the importance of honesty, responsibility, and confidence. First Tee quickly discovered that by blending the rules of the game with life and leadership skills, kids and teens weren’t just learning to putt - they were building character and learning important values.

How Bera Wealth Advisors Supports Be A Mentor Charleston

Be A Mentor is a Lowcountry non-profit organization. Their mission is to enable youth to develop positive relationships with caring adults through mentorship to empower them to reach their full potential. Be A Mentor focuses on children growing up in low-income neighborhoods where high levels of unemployment, crime, and violence are prevalent.

Their vision is to ensure that all Lowcountry youth have the character, confidence, and leadership skills to be successful in pursuing their dreams. The organization’s core values align directly with Bera’s: we both value honesty, authenticity, respect, and transparency.

In April of 2021, Bera Wealth Advisors partnered with David Aylor Law Offices and Be A Mentor for a book signing by author Chris Singleton for his new publication, Your Life Matters, an empowering book geared toward black youth. We were able to meet and learn from this inspiring author who lost his mother in the 2015 Emanuel AME Church shooting. His book is filled with famous heroes from black history that encourage kids to use their minds, hearts, voices, and hands in their fight for the life they dream of. Together, Bera Wealth and David Aylor purchased 50 books to give away to the many excited fans that attended. We were thrilled with the funds that were raised to support Be A Mentor.

“We are passionate about supporting the Charleston community and doing our part to make it one of the best places to live in America. It enriches our lives, makes deeper connections within our community, and connects us to inspiring people with courageous and powerful ideas impacting and improving our neighbors’ lives.” - Heath Johnson

Being a mentor to young children guarantees them that there is someone who cares about them, assures them that they are not alone when dealing with daily challenges, and makes them feel appreciated. Research shows that the quality of a mentor’s relationship has a powerful, positive effect on the child in personal, academic, and professional situations. Be a Mentor targets children “on the brink of success” to help bright students succeed.
